Around the YBA Network: Science Beyond the Classroom

Students of YBA Modi'in Advance to Robotics Finals for the Second Time

For the second year in a row, students of YBA Modi'in have advanced to the national finals of the international First Robotics Competition. First Robotics is an intensive competition that bills itself as "Sports for the Mind".  Participants from high schools around the world are challenged to work as a team to build an industrial sized robot that compete in games against other robots. Along the way they master concepts in technology and engineering, while building skills such as teamwork and communication. Last year, in its first year competing, the Modi'in team made it to the national finals and won several awards. This competition, like other projects throughout the YBA network, are part of YBA's commitment to promoting STEM [science, technology, engineering and mathematics] education in all of our schools, as we prepare students to be competitive in the 21st century marketplace.

Ulpenat Rosh Tzurim's Science Day

As they do each year, students of Ulpenat Bnei Akiva Rosh Tzurim in Gush Etzion held a "Day of Science" at Shaarei Tzedek Medical Center in Jerusalem. This year, the theme of the day was infectious diseases. Doctors and scientists gave presentations to the students on topics such as antibiotics, immunization, and on bacteria that exist in different parts of the world. The day concluded with the dramatic personal story of the mother of a young man with Down Syndrome who survived a harrowing illness caused by severe streptococcal infection.
